This photo is pretty vanilla at first look. But for me there is a lot going on. Sure, it was set up for the photo op, but it is a resident I have come to know pretty well.
It happen to be taken on his son’s birthday. The Texas Air National Guard bought him a bunch of gifts, multiple cakes were brought in (somehow, by residents so it wasn’t donated which would have to be stopped by Red Cross rules), and before about 30 residents and volunteers headed to a ranch to go horseback riding and petting zoo.
Even under the terrible circumstances I hope that they remember that day. Days like that are exactly why I do what I do. Bringing that little bit of happiness in the face of adversity is priceless.
